The Greater Oneonta
Historical Society

The Greater Oneonta Historical Society, formerly the Upper Susquehanna Historical Society, was formed in the late 1930s to preserve local history. The society's first president was Postmaster Chester A. Miller, who was elected in 1939 at St. James parish house on Main Street. The organization has always been dedicated to protecting Oneonta's past. In recent years, Sally Mullen led efforts to put Main Street on the national and state Registers of Historic Places. Her endeavor was successful in December 2003.

The Society eventually found a permanent home on the Bissell Block, the oldest brick building on Main Street and the former home of several area businesses. Private donations funded the purchase of 183 Main Street in 2001. The new home of the GOHS History Center offers exhibits, research, and programs for the public on the first floor. Restoration continues for the remaining floors, which will only add to the rich story of Oneonta's past.
